What is Reiki and why I teach it

REIKI is a Japanese term that means "universal energy" or "spiritual energy."

WE ARE MADE OF THAT ENERGY.

An initiation does not give us something we do not have.

The SYSTEM of Reiki offers ways in which we can ACCESS that energy, and use it to our benefit and to the benefit of others.

The SYSTEM of REIKI is NOT the ONLY way to access the ENERGY that is OURS (our "Great Bright Light", but it IS an EFFECTIVE, SIMPLE way to do it.

Mikao Usui, the founder/initiator of REIKI, said this of the system: the purpose is to lead a peaceful and happy life, heal ourselves and others and improve the happiness of others and ourselves. ... This method is to help body and spirit with intuitive power. ... It is a physical method of treatment. Ki and light are emanated from the healer (practitioner's) body, so if a healer places hands on an affected area, affliction will ease or be gone."

All over the world, wherever I go, I hear seekers say that they began their path with Reiki, but that they have moved on.

This surprises me so I sometimes ask: oh, you have moved on from universal energy? No more need for spiritual energy?

For though our paths are as diverse as we are, and not every path will find the PRACTICE of Reiki a tool which calls to them, my own path has shown that the system of REIKI supports and is complementary to all other modalities, allowing for a great clarity and fluidity of energy.

MY REIKI PATH

When I began with REIKI I, though I felt the energy, I was disappointed in the spiritual context taught, finding a dearth of connectivity between the initiation experience and a spiritual seeker context. My teacher was very nice, but for her, it was all about the hands-on treatment.

I decided to drop REIKI at that time, and probably said (as many do) that REIKI was not my path; besides, shamanism and angel work had already caught my attention.

That said, a while later, when my Dad got ill (and I, in France - he, in NY), I remembered that REIKI level II was about "distance" healing (my understanding of this has since been refined.) So I went back to my teacher to receive that initiation specifically to be able to work with my Dad for his healing, and eventually for his passing (I was with him physically when he passed, a great moment of healing for both of us.)

Despite the wonderful experience with my Dad, I still felt a dearth of spiritual context in my lineage, and so once again, I let go of REIKI, especially as my connection to the Angels had bloomed during that time.

Yet it was not meant to last. A while later, I was reading the events notification of a local Paris center (where I hold my Paris events) and saw that a REIKI III (Master) class was being held by a man hailing from Holland by way of Australia and Japan, the co-Founder (with his wife, Bronwen) of The International House of Reiki, Frans Stiene.

DING! DING! DING! WE HAVE A WINNER!

I was surprised by my reaction when I read his name, as if my whole being came to attention, and I stood up straighter and my skin seemed to alight. But most of all, my eyes filled with tears. And I know what that means...

I signed up for the class, even though I had opted out of REIKI ... twice.

This was guidance pure and true. The three-day class turned my world upside down, and in that lineage of "USUI REIKI RYOHO", I found my spiritual home, as the practices (five pillars: REI-JU (spiritual benediction and/or initation), precepts, meditation, chanting of symbols and mantras and hands-on healing of self and others) ALL are taught as TOOLS THAT POINT US TOWARD the ENERGY of REIKI ... towards WHO WE ARE TRULY.

Clearly it was taught that the practices are there to give us a TANGIBLE EXPERIENCE OF THE GREAT BRIGHT LIGHT (the Divine).

It confirmed what I HAD ALWAYS FELT: that an initiation of REIKI (or anything else, for that matter) DOES NOT GIVE US SOMETHING THAT WE DO NOT HAVE, but rather fans the flames to brighten our shining and quicken and ignite our passion for living that is aligned with our divine aspect.

Reminding us that this life is not supposed to be miserable, or hard, or painful. That we can access better, each of us. That we are loved.

More specifically, I can say that REIKI makes physical healing possible, and I KNOW this to be true:

TRUE: In 2002, I blew out both knees in the Philly Marathon (and had planned a party at my house afterward, what a day, what a dope lol). After, doctors in both the US and France told me I needed a double knee replacement. But from deep within, I felt a strong scream of NO! ... and left the path of traditional health care for dealing with that obstacle. I chose instead to work with REIKI.

Now, my knees are healed. Completely. As in, in 2011, I walked across Spain doing 500-mile St. James pilgrimage to Santiago, and then followed it up by walking the Inca Trail to Macchu Pichu in Peru. And just last month, I (finally) was able to take up anew (albeit slowly, carefully) my beloved running, completing the Bronx 10-miler in my hometown.

So, I teach REIKI because it WORKS... not just physically, but also mentally, emotionally and energetically.

It is my REIKI practice that allows me to keep my channel of communication clear for ALL I do, including Angelic Communication.

FOR THESE REASONS: tangible energetic development, increased peace and health, more emotional stability and less stress, as well as the maintenance and further opening of my channel of communication with the Divine, I practice and teach REIKI with joy in Europe and in the US, and am a Teacher affiliated with the International House of REIKI. I continue my studies with my teacher who studies himself continually in affiliation with the lineage center in Japan. We walk together towards that Great Bright Light - OUR light.

If you feel called to join in the fun, I hold VERY SMALL classes wherever I go so that each person can have the DIRECT EXPERIENCE OF REIKI energy. Because I KNOW that once we FEEL - tangibly - that energy, we will always have the tools and the desire to open up more and more to Who We Are Truly, that Great Bright Light.

Wishing you all the blooming of the ENERGY OF REIKI in your life... whether you opt for the practice of the SYSTEM OF REIKI or some other practice that brings you closer to it. In unity...

Love, light, laughter,
kathryn
